Web host: How to make subdomains at TimmeHosting point to /web subfolders

This is an archive post. It will not be updated.

Starting point

The client has a managed server at the web host TimmeHosting. I was supposed to move several Contao installations and other projects from another web host to TimmeHosting. While preparing, I created a suitably named subfolder for each project and, inside it, a web subfolder. I wanted the temporary subdomains to point to each of these web subfolders, just as Contao wants it.

The problem was that I couldn’t find a setting for this for the subdomains in the technical customer area ISPConfig.

Solution

A call to TimmeHosting brought the insight: in ISPConfig, this doesn’t work via the item “Webseiten > Subdomains” (Websites > Subdomains). However, the service employee unlocked a new item for me, “Webseiten > Subdomains (vHost)”. There, when creating a subdomain, I could define the desired base folder.

But beware, confusion ahead:

In the default root folder I had created my folder “testprojekt” and inside it the subfolder “web” required by Contao.

However, the base folder must

  • not be testprojekt/web,
  • but must be web/testprojekt.

Beware: it must also not be web/testprojekt/web, as you might assume. See the explanation in my other post “no input specified”.

Why? Because TimmeHosting, for its part, also calls the default root folder “web”, and on the other hand the nginx configuration for Contao 4 automatically “adds in” the additional web folder created for Contao.
